5 Steps On How To Prepare for your First Escape Room

When it comes to escaping from escape rooms, two of the biggest problems that most beginner escape room goers have are that not many of them understand how they or choose one that’s right for them.

As such, having to escape from an escape room can be a frustrating experience for most of them.  That’s why here at Escapology, we created a list of 5 Steps on How to Have An Awesome First Time Experience in an Escape Room. 

1. Get to know your teammates and their strategy styles prior to playing an escape room game (if possible) 

When to comes to solving escape room puzzles, everyone has a different take as to how they should be solved. So whether you decide to play a game with friends, family members, or coworkers, it’s important that you and your teammates take the time to get to know each other's’ styles.

This way, you can assign roles to one another in order to have a greater chance of winning the game(clue keeper, lock tracker, ring leader, and so on). 

Ideally, you and your teammates should meet up in a public place about a week before you go to play the actual game. However, if that is not possible, then you can have everyone fill out a Google Doc that lists everyone’s strengths, weaknesses, and assigned roles. Pretty simple and straightforward. 

2. Choose A Game Based More on the Theme Rather Than on the Level of Difficulty

Sometimes “easier” escape room games might not engage players due to the simplicity of the puzzles. In an ideal situation, you want to choose a game that is both appropriate for both your team’s level and a common interest that you all share.

However, if that is not possible, then it’s better to choose a game based on its theme more than is level of difficulty. After all, you’ll have more fun if you’ve always wanted to pretend to be a secret agent tasked with finding The Antidote. 

Escape room games often range from easiest to hardest. Here at Escapology, our easiest escape room is Antidote whereas our hardest is Shanghaied. Regardless as to which game you choose, as long as you and your teammates have an awesome time immersing yourselves into the games, then the game itself will be fun.

Plus, you’ll have a better chance of solving the puzzles if the game is enjoyable for you and your teammates. 

We understand that not everyone enjoys the thrill of solving a challenging puzzle, which is why our games have varying difficulties. 

You don’t want to be about 20 minutes into the game, when you realize you and your teammates aren’t engaged with the scenario. 

3. Do Your Research

Even though it can be more thrilling to go to an escape room game blind, it’s recommended you understand Escape Room Locks and understand how escape Rooms Work.

When discovering the world of escape rooms it can be tempting to look up the solution(s) to your favorite game. However, this isn’t recommended since limited knowledge and planning is part of the thrill of an escape room adventure.

Especially when your team barely escapes with 5 minutes left on the clock. However it is important to know escape room mechanics this way, you can spend more time figuring out the clues rather than how the game works.

4. Be Punctual and Make Reservations

If you are making a reservation for a special occasion, it’s important that your party agrees on a date and time that works for everyone. Be sure to stick to your reservation date. Here at Escapology, we understand that life gets in the way, which is why if you can’t keep the date, be sure to tell us at least 24 hours prior.

On the day of the game, it is important to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to the game so you can take care of everything prior to the game start. This ensures that the game starts on time and everyone feels like their got enough value for the game. This is also a good chance to meet other participants who signed up for the same game as you. 

If it just so happens that you’ll be late to the escape room, then please, give the host and your teammates a call so they will know how long to wait for you.

5. Have Fun! 

Regardless as to whether or not your team makes it out of the room in time, part of the fun of being in an escape room is getting to know how your teammates respond in certain situations. So even if your team doesn’t win, at least you all know that you had a good time getting to know and learn from one another.
